چکیده
The construction of unitary operator bases in a finite-dimensional Hilbert space is reviewed through a nonstandard approach combinining angular momentum theory and representation theory of SU(2). A single formula for the bases is obtained from a polar decomposition of SU(2) and analysed in terms of cyclic groups, quadratic Fourier transforms, Hadamard matrices and generalized Gauss sums. Weyl pairs, generalized Pauli operators and their application to the unitary group and the Pauli group naturally arise in this approach. PACS numbers: 03.65.Fd, 03.65.Ta, 03.65.Ud, 02.20.Qs

SU(2) and SU(1, 1) Approaches to Phase Operators and Temporally Stable Phase States: Applications to Mutually Unbiased Bases and Discrete Fourier Transforms
We propose a group-theoretical approach to the generalized oscillator algebra Aκ recently investigated in J. Phys. A: Math. Theor. 2010, 43, 115303. The case κ ≥ 0 corresponds to the noncompact group SU(1,1) (as for the harmonic oscillator and the Pöschl-Teller systems) while the case κ < 0 is described by the compact group SU(2) (as for the Morse system). We construct the phase operators and t...
متن کاملIsolated Hadamard Matrices from Mutually Unbiased Product Bases
A new construction of complex Hadamard matrices of composite order d = pq, with primes p, q, is presented which is based on pairs of mutually unbiased bases containing only product states. We illustrate the method for many product dimensions d < 100 by analytically deriving complex Hadamard matrices, both with zero and non-zero defect. In particular, we obtain at least 12 new isolated Butson-ty...
متن کاملSystems of mutually unbiased Hadamard matrices containing real and complex matrices
We use combinatorial and Fourier analytic arguments to prove various non-existence results on systems of real and complex unbiased Hadamard matrices. In particular, we prove that a complete system of complex mutually unbiased Hadamard matrices (MUHs) in any dimension cannot contain more than one real Hadamard matrix. We also give new proofs of several known structural results in low dimensions.
متن کاملMutually unbiased bases and Hadamard matrices of order six
We report on a search for mutually unbiased bases MUBs in six dimensions. We find only triplets of MUBs, and thus do not come close to the theoretical upper bound 7. However, we point out that the natural habitat for sets of MUBs is the set of all complex Hadamard matrices of the given order, and we introduce a natural notion of distance between bases in Hilbert space. This allows us to draw a ...
متن کاملQuantum phase uncertainty in mutually unbiased measurements and Gauss sums
Mutually unbiased bases (MUBs), which are such that the inner product between two vectors in different orthogonal bases is constant equal to the inverse 1/ √ d, with d the dimension of the finite Hilbert space, are becoming more and more studied for applications such as quantum tomography and cryptography, and in relation to entangled states and to the Heisenberg-Weil group of quantum optics. C...
